Man killed after being struck on Deerfoot Trail

CALGARY- A man was killed on Monday afternoon, after being struck by a vehicle on Deerfoot Trail.

Police say the 46-year-old man was involved in a minor, two car collision near Airport Trail around 12:30 p.m. He got out of his truck, and that’s when he was hit by a passing van.

“He got out of his truck to presumably assess his damage when a northbound Pontiac Montana minivan… lost traction and struck what was now a pedestrian at the edge of Deerfoot Trail,” explained Sgt. Joerg Gottschling from the Calgary Police Service. “There was a district member who actually witnessed the pedestrian getting struck, and then conducted CPR until EMS arrived.”

The victim was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition, but died of his injuries.

WATCH: Sgt. Joerg Gottschling and EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux comment on the fatal pedestrian collision.

So far there is no word if charges will be laid, but it’s not believed the driver of the minivan was speeding.

Police say the tragedy serves as a warning for other drivers.

“You’re safest in your vehicle, unless you can get far away from the road,” Gottschling says. “Of course if you’re stuck in a collision in the middle of Deerfoot Trail, there’s nowhere safe to go.”

Roadways in and around Calgary are especially dangerous, due to slick conditions.
