Blowing snow batters southern Alberta

CALGARY – Winter weather continues to plague much of southern Alberta, with wind and blowing snow reducing visibility on area highways.

Environment Canada issued a series of weather alerts around 9 a.m. on Monday, saying wind gusts were reaching up to 100 km/h in areas like Lethbridge, Taber, Brooks, Strathmore and Vulcan.

They warn that combined with recent snowfall, the strong winds are producing blowing snow and reduced visibility of less than one kilometre.

The deteriorating weather conditions forced Lethbridge RCMP to issue a travel advisory warning motorists to stay away from highways in the surrounding area, which have become icy and hazardous.

Police say they’ve responded to several crashes, and aren’t recommending travel.

Environment Canada also issued a snowfall warning for for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre,  Rocky Mountain House and Caroline just before noon.
