The organizers of a petition that hoped to force a referendum on B.C.’s marijuana laws have fallen short.

Sensible BC says their campaign collected over 200,000 signatures from British Columbians. However, that’s only 66 per cent of what was needed to trigger a referendum.

The campaign calls it ” remarkable feat” and says they plan to try to force another referendum in the future. The campaign by Sensible BC lasted 90 days.

Organizers issued the following statement Sunday night:

BC’s referendum system is notoriously difficult to access. Had we been working under the rules of almost any other referendum system on earth, we would have qualified for a public vote. 200,000 signatures in 90 days is a significant accomplishment.

The deadline for the petition to be handed to Elections BC is Monday, December 9.
