HALIFAX – The salaries, benefits and pensions of Nova Scotia politicians will be reviewed by an independent panel under legislation introduced Friday.

Premier Stephen McNeil says changes to the House of Assembly Act will allow a three-person panel to look at such things as housing and constituency allowances.

He says the members of the panel could be announced as early as next week.

The legislation gives the panel until March 31 to complete its work.

That changes a previous provision that stipulated reviews were to be completed within 90 days following a general election.

Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie expressed disappointment with yet another review and says the government could move to make substantial changes to the current pension plan, which he says is far too rich and should be scrapped.
