The BC SPCA has seized 10 horses from a property in Grand Forks and moved eight of them to a stable in Langley to recover.
Two of the horses were so sick they had to be put down.
Shawn Eccles, a cruelty investigator with the BC SPCA, tells Global News some of the horses were starving, some were lame and some had other complications such as wounds on their legs.
The man whose property they were seized from has been on the SPCA’s radar for a few years and while no charges have been laid, an investigation is underway.
He buys horses and while he does sell some to slaughter houses, he says he does not purchase horses to sell them to slaughter houses to make money.
Eccles says it appears that the horses that were seized did not have adequate shelter, and some were denied the basic necessities of life.
There are only 29 cruelty investigators for the BC SPCA in the province, and they are concerned because they already have way more abused animals in their care than they normally do at this time of year. They have 20 horses alone.
