TORONTO — Celebrity mom Hilary Duff launched into a rant Wednesday about the need for laws to protect the privacy of children — even though she regularly posts photos of her son Luca on social media.

“I hate when they take photographs of my son,” Duff fumed, referring to the paparazzi. “I hate when they jump around and there’s 10 of them all snapping away when we’re just trying to enjoy each other at the park and every moment seems to be documented for people to make money on.”

Duff, who was in Toronto to promote a brand of batteries, welcomed son Luca Cruz in March 2012 with her husband, Edmonton-born former NHL player Mike Comrie.

In an interview to air Thursday on the Roz & Mocha Show on KiSS 92.5, the 26-year-old actress and singer said she is an advocate for laws to prevent paparazzi from photographing minor children.

“I totally think children need more rights,” said Duff. “I think kids should be able to be kids for as long as possible.”

Duff said having every outing with her little boy captured by cameras is “encroaching [on] our time together and our happiness and our growth as mom and son, and family, and all that stuff.”

She added: “It’s just really tough. I understand it’s a business and people are making money but there has to be some rules.”

Duff said she is particularly upset about how the photos are used. “They do disgusting things like ‘Who wore it better?’ on celebrities’ kids who both have the same outfit on,” she said. “It makes me sick and I think that’s really wrong.”

Duff’s outrage is surprising considering less than two weeks ago she tweeted a “sweet pic” of her and Luca taken by a paparazzo.

In fact, she has shared nearly half a dozen photos of her son with her 3.9 million Twitter followers in the last two months alone — including one of mother and child at the park.

In August, Duff and Comrie brought Luca to the premiere of Planes, where the family posed for photographers.

Duff shot to fame in the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire. She released four albums and starred in a number of movies, including two made-in-Ontario Cheaper by the Dozen flicks and the 2005 Toronto-shot comedy The Perfect Man.

She has said she hopes to make a comeback next year with a new album.

Duff married Comrie — whose father co-founded The Brick retail chain — in 2010. Comrie, 33, played for several NHL teams including the Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators.
