Alberta towns digging out after blizzard

CALGARY- There is still a lot of digging out to do around southern Alberta, following this week’s blizzard.

Irricana is just one of many towns that got clobbered, and many streets were buried under massive snow drifts. Back alleys are unrecognizable and roadways have been turned into mogul courses by the blowing snow.

The town has rented extra plows and dump trucks to try and get rid of it all.

“Our guys are running at capacity,” says Bob Payette, assistant CAO for the Town of Irricana. “We’ll probably have to hire a couple casual guys in to operate the loaders. We’ll get through it, but it’s going to take three or four days so people will have to be patient.”

It’s a similar scene in areas like Langdon.

“Old man winter hit us hard,” said Arthur Zacharias, who owns a gamebird farm near the town.

He and a friend spent six hours digging out his pheasants, turkeys and partridges, who were buried in their shelters. Fortunately they all made it through the storm OK.
