Const. John Zivcic dies in hospital days after car accident

TORONTO – The Toronto police officer involved in a car accident on the weekend died in hospital Monday.

Constable John Zivcic was seriously injured after a two-car crash in Toronto’s west-end Saturday near Bloor Street and Highway 427.

The 34-year-old was on-duty and responding to a call in an unmarked car when the crash happened.

He underwent a series of operations at St. Michael’s Hospital but died at 12:34 p.m. Monday.  Deputy Chief Peter Sloly said during an afternoon press conference that Zivcic, a seven-year veteran of the police force, died surrounded by family.

“I want to express our deepest condolences to the Zivcic family,” he said. “I want to express our thanks to John for his tremendous service to our city. He died in the line of duty.”

The Canadian flag outside of 22 division where Zivcic worked was lowered to half mast shortly after his death.

Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack said Zivcic’s death brings with it a “terrible, terrible time of grieving.”

“We’ve lost one of our own,” he said. “Right now, our only concern is to help his poor mother and family, they’re absolutely devastated.”

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later this week.

Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly expressed his “deepest condolences” for the Zivcic family in a written statement Monday.

"His service and courage will not be forgotten," Kelly said in the statement.
