The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is joining the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, October 5th to 15th, 2022.  This year’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait.  Plan your escape”, works to educate everyone about simple yet important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

“Today’s homes burn faster than ever.  You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds.  Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Lorraine Carli, Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.

Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity to share information about the importance of smoke alarms, fire escape plans, and other fire prevention tips.  These include:

  • Developing a home-fire escape plan and practicing it regularly with all who live in the home.  The fire escape plan should meet the needs of all who live in the home, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Installing smoke alarms inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home.  Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
  • Keeping a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, basement, and garage, and knowing how to use it properly.
  • Keeping lighters and matches in a closed cupboard, and out of reach from children.
  • Closing doors at night to help slow the spread of fire and smoke.
