Spice Island Cultural Festival, the one official annual celebration for the Grenadian community of Quebec, is this weekend. The main event is Saturday throughout the afternoon and evening in Little Burgundy. Saturday night in particular will be a sight to behold as two events merge: Spice Island, and the Géants acrobatic performance by Montréal Complètement Cirque. Gourmet Caribbean food by chefs from Grenada AND high-flying acrobats! It’s all happening on the baseball field at Parc Vinet, just off Notre Dame and behind the Joe Beef restaurants. On Sunday, it’s a celebrity cookoff and block party. Chefs from Grenada, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal compete to cook the Oil Down, Grenada’s national dish. That’s happening in the parking lot of Greenz in Ville St. Pierre. Festival organizer Gemma Raeburn-Baynes is now 71 years old and this incredible woman continues to donate most of her free time to her community. Come on down!
