On Saturday, October 5th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Mainway Recreation Centre in Burlington (4015 Mainway, east of Walkers Line), The Winch Group Benefits Consultants Inc. of Burlington will be holding their 10th Annual Community Sports Equipment Drive. Students from Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, along with other local high school volunteers and members of the Winch Group, will be accepting new and gently used sporting equipment.

Equipment will be packed in trailers provided by the Ontario Provincial Police for transport to First Nations communities in the North West and North East regions of Ontario

For the past nine years, Burlington and the surrounding area has shown that it is a sport-loving community with a heart. Thousands of pieces of used sporting equipment have been donated to benefit young people in remote Northern Ontario First Nations communities who would otherwise not have access to such essential equipment.

Lindsay Webb, a Winch Group partner and organizer of the equipment drive, enjoys delivering the sporting equipment personally and seeing the positive impact it has had in some of the remote First Nations communities. The Winch Group covers all costs related to the equipment drive and the transportation of donated items to the First Nation settlements.

“Last year, we collected around 90 bicycles at the drive and over 140 bags of hockey equipment,” says Webb. “Even into our 10th year, we continue to be amazed at the growing support we receive from the Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville communities. We also have primary and secondary five schools in Burlington and Oakville that are holding a friendly competition to see who can gather the most equipment before and at the event.”

Working with members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Treaty Three Police Service and the Anishinabek Police Service, this year’s First Nation host communities  Wikweminong on Manitoulin Island will be expecting their delivery for the week of October  7th, 2019 and the remote North Western communities will be expected to have their delivery February 2019 for the North West region.
