Join Safe and Caring Schools on Monday, October 1, at Calgary Municipal Complex, wear your 2018 Orange Shirt to show your support and demonstrate commitment to the work of reconciliation and that Every Child Matters. Orange Shirt Day is an outcome of the 2013 Joseph Mission Residential School Commemoration Project and Reunion in Williams Lake, BC, where Phyllis Webstad spoke of how her new orange shirt was taken away, and how it seemed that nobody cared. Her story represents the many harms experienced by children in the residential schools, and Orange Shirt Day has grown to provide the opportunity to discuss all aspects of residential schools and to help continue the work of reconciliation. The event is an opportunity to experience a taste of community politics and participate in an activity supporting reconciliation. There will be residential school survivors, students, officials from all levels of government and traditional entertainment. The activities wrap-up with traditional drumming, a round dance and a group photo with the expected 500+ students and guests. The 2018 Orange Shirt logo features a design by Calgary student Sophie St. Cyr, and is available for order on-line at http://www.safeandcaring.ca/orangeshirtday.
