Billy Shields started working in journalism after graduating from Kenyon College in 1997.
Before joining Global Montreal in 2011 he wrote on staff for newspapers in Mexico, the Caribbean and Miami.
A piece he wrote on lawsuit loans in the cruise industry took the grand prize in the Florida Bar Media Awards in 2009.
In 2003 he was on a team of journalists at The Virgin Islands Daily News that won the Associated Press Managing Editors Award for Public Service after exposing rampant government excess in questionable sewer contracts.
He has a master’s degree in journalism and Latin American studies from the University of Florida.
He was born and raised in Richmond, Va.
