TORONTO – Activists in New York City targeted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in protest of the Ferguson grand jury decision not to bring criminal charges against police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown.
The hashtag #stoptheparade began to trend on Twitter late Wednesday night and into Thursday morning ahead of the annual event.
A Facebook group was created just hours before the parade got underway.
“We do not accept state violence or genocide as cause for celebration. When the masses gather for the Thanksgiving Day Parade, we will gather to remind the public that BLACK LIVES MATTER,” reads a posting on the group’s page.
As of 10:30 a.m., at least 10 people were reportedly arrested on the parade route.
