The driver charged with killing a woman at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville was previously accused of beating his mother and threatening her with a knife, according to police records released Monday.

Police charged James Alex Fields Jr. with second-degree murder after the silver Dodge Challenger they say he was driving barrelled through a crowd of counter-protesters.

The incident occurred after a state of emergency was declared by Virginia's governor.
