Tsuu T’ina and province officially sign southwest ring road deal

CALGARY – It’s another major milestone in the construction of the southwest ring road.

The province signed an agreement with the Tsuu T’ina Nation on Wednesday, setting the groundwork for the construction of the roadway.

Premier Alison Redford, Tsuu T’ina Nation Chief Roy Whitney and Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver signed their names to the Transportation and Utility Corridor Agreement in a ceremony on Tsuu T’ina land.

As part of the deal, the Tsuu T’ina will give up 1,058 acres of land in exchange for 5,018 acres from the province and $275 million.

The province will also pay an additional $65 million to the Tsuu T’ina for infrastructure and displacement costs, putting the total at $340.7 million.

The province will also purchase a corner of the Weaselhead Park from the City of Calgary, and the existing high-pressure gas line and overhead electrical lines will be relocated from Weaselhead Park to the transportation and utility corridor.

“This agreement really demonstrates our government’s commitment to building Alberta in a way that is good for all of us and that involves many voices,” says Premier Alison Redford.

The Alberta government has seven years to build the project.

“We will work in partnership with the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the federal government to proceed with the land transfer,” says Transportation Minister Ric McIver. “This work will be guided by a committee with representatives from all parties and we will continue to work together in good faith.”

The province says the completed ring road will enhance the safety and the movement of goods and people around the city and the province.
