TORONTO — An article posted Wednesday claims actor Charlie Sheen has called on Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to resign because his “struggles with substance abuse make him unfit to lead Canada’s largest city.”
The story, though, is complete fiction.
It appears on The Daily Currant, a satirical news website with headlines like “Government Plans $2 Billion Bailout of Blockbuster” and “Sarah Palin: ‘I’ll Go To Canada’ for Health Care.”
The article claims Sheen has been in Toronto “for the past two weeks shooting the sixth Scary Movie film” and was interviewed outside his hotel by a reporter for Montreal newspaper La Presse.
“I hate to pass judgment on anybody, especially given my history,” Sheen is quoted as saying. “But I’ve been seeing those videos on the news, and I think it’s fair to say that Rob Ford parties too much. I can honestly tell you I’ve never been that high.”
On Thursday, Sheen took to Twitter with a message for Ford.
“The only truth or correct reporting in today’s repulsive story regarding my alleged comments about you, is the accurate spelling of your great city. Your personal life is, and never would be, any of my business.”
Sheen offered his assistance “in any capacity in this media cesspool.”
He wrote: “Please accept the noble offer of my steady hand and compassionate heart.”
The fake story made the rounds on social media.
Brenda Verma tweeted a link to the article with the comment, “You know it’s time to go when…”
“What’s more bizarre? That Charlie Sheen says Rob Ford should quit or that SCARY MOVIE 6 is being filmed?” tweeted 100NEWS.
