RCMP in Surrey are investigating a suspicious crash, involving a possible ‘gas van’.
They are vans which have been modified to move and sell gasoline on the black market.
In this case, the panel van smashed into a pickup truck Sunday afternoon near Scott Road and 104 Avenue. It then promptly erupted into flames.
The two people in the pickup have been treated in hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the van had disappeared by the time emergency crews got there. A similar crash and vehicle fire happened in Vancouver in early October. In both cases, the vans contained a large storage tank.
Vancouver Police say there has been an uptick in gas being bought fraudulently, and then sold from these vans to consumers.
