CALGARY- The City of Calgary has charged a limousine driver in connection with a weekend promotion by a U.S-based limo and sedan broker that saw customers end up in unlicensed cars with unlicensed drivers.
The company Uber connects app users with limo and sedan services and over the weekend offered Calgarians to try out the service for free.
But city officials say the company hired by Uber to provide the service, was operating at least one unlicensed vehicle with an unlicensed driver.
The driver of the unlicensed limousine is facing a $1500 fine while the City is considering taking Executive Limousine to court.
“Executive Limouisine’s office is empty… the company has been shut down,” says Marc Halat, the City of Calgary Chief Licensing Officer. “As for Uber, the city continues to investigate but the company isn’t facing a fine or a charge.”
City officials were first alerted to the promotion when someone tweeted about having just used the new Uber app.
The City says it believes up to 20 unlicensed vehicles and drivers could have been used by Executive Limousine over the weekend.
In a statement to Global News, Uber says: “It’s the latest incident in what’s proving to be a rocky relationship with the City.”
Uber also says it is opposed to the City’s $78 minimum charge for sedan service, saying it doesn’t fit with the company’s business plan.
The City says it is open to discussing the concerns with Uber.
