B.C. sex offender, subject of 2002 manhunt, released from Saskatchewan jail

Ernest Thomas Meigs, 38, has served a portion of his 14 year and 6 month sentence, and has now been released on statutory release from the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

Meigs, was the subject of a multi-day 2002 manhunt in B.C. after he broke into a home in Surrey, tied up a woman and raped her, and then kidnapped another woman at gunpoint. He was finally caught near Merritt.

He was sentenced for break, enter and commit, break and enter with intent, theft over $5,000, two counts of sexual assault with a weapon, kidnap – unlawfully confine, and pointing a firearm.

Edmonton Police released the warning about Meigs because he will be living in Edmonton.

Police believe him to be an untreated violent sexual offender who poses a risk of significant harm to the community. They believe that Meigs is at high risk to re-offend.

Meigs is 38 years old, about 6′ 4″, 210 lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes.
