Fright filled Okanagan festivities

Halloween festivities were in full swing across the Okanagan tonight. From zombies to trick or treating, there was something for everyone.

In Kelowna, the second annual Trunk or Treat provided kids with a safe environment to get candy. Dozens of vehicles parked at the First Lutheran Christian School and hundreds of kids filled up their goody bags with treats.

“I think families are looking for a safe alternative, something that can happen in daylight hours,” said Heather Sandager, organizer for Trunk or Treat. “Something they can do then go home and still have the same supper and bedtime routines that they normally do during the school week.”

In Penticton, brain eaters made their way down Main street for the first ever Zombie Walk. There was everything from face painting to palm reading, hundreds showed up.

“We wanted celebrate something in Penticton, there traditionally hasn’t been anything downtown so we threw around idea of ‘Day of Dead’ which turned into zombies. Businesses all loved the idea and jumped on board so we went with it,” said Kerri Milton of the Downtown Business Association.

In the north Okanagan, Armstrong celebrated their centennial celebration with 100 jackolanterns to mark the historic day. But while that was going on, merchants indulged little kids — arming them to the brim with sweets as they trick or treated.

“We’ve had over 100 kids trick or treating, we’re all big Halloween crazies in here, so we’re looking for new fun things to add,” said Celina Westovy of JJ Pizzas.
