REGINA – A 29-year-old woman faces a second degree murder charge in Regina’s 8th homicide of the year.

Just before 3 A.M. Thursday police were called to the 700 block of Athol Street for a report of two females fighting in the street. When police arrived they found Cassandra Joan Desjarlais, 24, seriously injured. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Late Thursday afternoon, police announced the charge against Brianna Joyce Wesaquate. She’s due in a Regina courtroom on Friday morning.

Witnesses say there was yelling down the street and saw the fight break out.

“I heard screaming, but around here that’s a regular thing,” said one neighbour. “You don’t pay attention anymore.”

Several people were taken into custody but at the early stages of the investigation the roles of each person have not been determined.

Elizabeth Popowich, a Regina police spokesperson, told media the investigation may not be limited to the street.

“There may well be evidence in a household nearby,” said Popowich. “Our forensic identification investigators are not only working on capturing physical evidence that may be in the street, but we’re also working to obtain a search warrant for a residence.”

Neighbours say there’s a significant gang presence in the area, but declined to appear on camera out of fear for their own safety.

“You can’t walk outside without worrying someone is going to follow you,” one person told Global News.

However, police say there’s no indication of gang involvement at this stage of the investigation.
