Determined golfers getting in bonus rounds

SASKATOON – It started off slow but the weather has cooperated most of the golf season, even allowing some bonus rounds.

At this time last year, courses were already closed due to snow.  The six months of winter the city experienced is in the back of most of our minds now, including die-hard golfers who aren’t ready to pack away their clubs just yet.

With one city course already closed and another set to shutdown Monday, Wildwood is the only civic course open, weather permitting.

A delayed start to the season didn’t affect the bottom line.

“We’re probably going to be just over $3 million in revenue this year, it might be a little bit too early for a record but we are achieving our 100 percent cost recovery, which is always a goal for us,” said Brad Babyak, City of Saskatoon leisure services branch facility supervisor.

Courses continue to book up while snow approaches.

“When the weather forecast says 12 degrees and sun, it’s going to be busy out here, it’s to bad it’s windier then expected but it’s definitely been a great fall so far and a great year all together,” said Mike Doherty, Moonlake Golf and Country Club.

Moonlake Golf and Country Club has been open well into November before, after last years early snowfall.

Die-hard golfers aren’t scared to bundle up to get in some extra rounds.

“We pretty much just keep an eye on the weather as much as we can and while we have to put the greens to sleep at some point, we like to stay open as late as possible,” said Doherty.
