CALGARY- A tight race in Ward 1 has led the city’s returning officer to call for a recount.
Ward Sutherland narrowly defeated fellow candidate Chris Harper, by only 85 votes. Counts in the early morning hours determined that Sutherland had 8,724 votes, compared to Harper’s 8,639.

Returning officer Barb Clifford says they will recount the ballots, beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
Ward 1 was an open race, after long-time city councillor Dale Hodges decided not to seek re-election.
