EDMONTON- A Gospel Mission in the Boyle Street neighbourhood was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning.

Fire crews were called to the House of Refuge Mission, located at 95th Street and 103rd A Avenue, around 2:45 a.m.

“The fire was growing pretty fast. We set up some protection to the house on the north side of the building to keep it from catching on fire,” said District Chief Bill Brown with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.

Two ladder trucks were set up to put the fire out from above. About eight trucks and more than 30 firefighters were called in to battle the blaze.

“The flames, they were so high I was actually worried they were going to actually engulf the trees over there. I was actually worried it was going to go straight into the house right across from it. The flames were so high,” said Katey Gallagher who lives nearby.

Brown says the roof collapsed into the building, which was a complete loss. Demolition crews were called in to knock over the walls.

It took crews a couple of hours to put out the fire, according to Brown. No injuries were reported in the fire.

At this time it is not known what caused the blaze.
