REGINA – Some Canadian sports history was made Saturday and a portion of it was played out right here in Saskatchewan.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and Hockey Canada teamed up for the 3rd annual World Girls Hockey Weekend this Thankgiving, which aimed to celebrate the women’s hockey.
IIHF and Hockey Canada initiated the “longest game in history” – having a continuous match coast-to-coast, linking together female athletes on Saturday.
Games started early in Newfoundland and worked their way across to the Doug Wickenheiser Arena in Regina around noon and wrapped up in B.C.
“A big thing with hockey and women’s hockey more specifically is recruitment and retention, this is one of the initiatives to get girls out, it’s a non-threatening environment, it’s based around having fun,” said Kelsie Graham, coordinator of player development with the Saskatchewan Hockey Association.
“They get to play with different girls they haven’t played before, they get jerseys, obviously things like this being promoted and we’re just trying to grow the game and keep girls involved.”
Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget players participated in 44 scrimmages over the course of the day.
The scores between Team Red and Team White were carried over from province to province.
