Jessica Alba reflects on working in Canada, becoming a mom

TORONTO — Actress, author and entrepreneur Jessica Alba — in Toronto on Wednesday to promote her line of eco-friendly baby products — feels right at home in Canada.

Alba’s breakout role on the big screen was in 2003’s Honey, a movie she made in Toronto. In 2004, she met her now-husband Cash Warren while working on the sci-fi flick Fantastic Four in Vancouver. And, Alba learned she was pregnant with her first baby while in Toronto shooting The Love Guru in 2007.

(Parts of 2007’s Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and 2008’s The Eye were filmed in Vancouver.)

“I’ve lived in Canada, all together, probably about five years,” Alba said. “So yeah, it’s like my second home.”

Appearing on Global’s The Morning Show, the 32-year-old mother of two reflected on Honey, in which she plays a choreographer whose mentor threatens to blacklist her in the industry if she doesn’t sleep with him.

“It’s an inspiring movie for young girls,” she said. “At the time I had just done [the TV series] Dark Angel and I was in this action hero fanboy kind of space and it was cool to be someone that young women looked up to, and to play a strong character and a strong role model.”

Alba said she has become picky about the roles she takes now that she’s a mom.

“Prior to having my kids it was just about always working and always being on a movie set,” she explained. “Now it’s much more about the quality and being inspired by the director, the character, the story — so it’s not as driven by commerce.”

Alba said her goal when she started acting was to be financially secure. “I didn’t want to be a struggling professional in anything. My parents didn’t have a lot and they struggled a lot and so I just wanted to make sure I was going to be set and I wasn’t going to struggle,” she said.

Becoming a parent inspired her to create The Honest Company, which offers eco-friendly diapers, wipes and body care products as well as non-toxic cleaning products.

“The actual physical act of being pregnant was a mind-blowing experience for sure. It was also the time that I was all of a sudden aware of what I was cleaning my home with, what I was breathing in, the food that I was eating, putting on my skin — everything goes into your bloodstream,” said Alba. “I was hyper aware of this environment that I was living in.”

Alba is also acutely aware that she is constantly in the public eye. She said it’s impossible to protect her daughters from the paparazzi — so she ignores it.

“The more sort of anxious you are, your kids feed off your energy then that’s how they’re going to feel about it,” she said. “I just tell Honor, it’s no big deal. It happens to everyone.”

How will she feel if her children express an interest in acting?

“They can do whatever they want,” said Alba, “after they graduate from college.”
