Mayoral candidate proposes amnesty for corrupt companies

MONTREAL – Mayoral candidate Mélanie Joly says that if she were elected, she’d implement an amnesty program to corrupt contractors.

“It’s time for Montreal to get the money back from engineering firms, and the same time make sure that we can start on a clean slate,” she said while campaigning among LaSalle’s Sikh community.

“To change their governance, to give some money back to Montrealers, and at the same time start doing business in a clean way.”

It’s not entirely clear how Joly’s system would work. Joly is touting the idea as a way to recoup money stolen from public coffers, while at the same time allowing local companies the chance to continue to perform work, keeping jobs and money in the city.

But other candidates, like Marcel Côté, aren’t enthusiastic.

“I’m against an amnesty,” Côté said at a press conference in the Old Port.

“We have to find a non-judicial way to settle” with companies guilty of corruption. Côté said he supports requiring contractors to follow a set of best practices.

“Let’s make sure that these companies that admit their wrongdoing get a code of conduct,” he said.

Montreal’s mayoral elections are slated for Nov. 3.
