Friends and family will gather in Delta Sunday morning to remember slain teen Laura Szendrei three years after her death.

The “Walk, Run and Roll” memorial raises money for a scholarship in Szendrei’s name and allows the community to honour her memory.

The 15-year-old was brutally murdered beaten while walking along a path in Delta’s Mackie Park on Sept. 26, 2010. She died in hospital the next day.

Szendrei’s killer was 17-years-old at the time and pleaded guilty last year to a charge of second-degree murder.

He was caught after a Mr. Big police sting operation involving the video game Call of Duty.

Her murderer told a court last month that he planned to subdue and rape the girl in the attack.

Szendrei screamed and got away, but he caught up to her and beat her over the head with a metal pipe.

A judge is still deciding whether the now 20-year-old should be sentenced as an adult.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 18.

If sentenced as a youth, the man faces a maximum of seven years, with four served in custody and the remainder served in the community.

An adult sentence for second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence with a minimum eligibility for parole set at 10 years.

Sunday’s event begins at 9 a.m. at Burnsview Secondary School.
