Stanley Cup rioter sentenced to 30 days in jail

More than two years after the Stanley Cup, some of the accused rioters are still going through the court system.

Kurt Sikora, charged with taking part in a riot and mischief,  has been sentenced to 30 days in jail to be served on weekends, 75 days of community service and one year probation.

Sikora was also accused of being part of a group that assaulted two employees of Global BC.

Reporter Ted Field and cameraman Karl Casselman suffered bruises and Casselman’s camera was damaged during the night of the riot, June 15, 2011.

In court on Friday during the pre-sentencing, provincial court Judge Reg Harris interrupted the defense saying, “I have a problem with the treatment of the media in this case. They are the eyes and ears of society.”

Harris went on to say “they are a benefit to society and they should have protection, and if they are harmed there should be consequences.”
