Alberta Children’s Hospital beefs up, adds renowned neurology expert

CALGARY – An internationally renowned expert in child neurology has been recruited to Calgary in an attempt to develop a world-class program.

Dr. Jong Rho, director of pediatric epilepsy research at the Barrow Neurological Institute and associate director of child neurology at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Centre in Phoenix, Ariz., will start at the University of Calgary and Alberta Children’s Hospital on Aug. 1.

“This institution is ripe for explosive growth,” Rho said in an interview at the hospital Thursday. “It’s got enough of a critical mass, but it’s not quite there yet.

“But importantly, it’s the people.”

Rho, who has worked at hospitals across the U.S., is the first appointee under the Dr. Robert Haslam Chair in Child Neurology.

The endowed chair is named in honour of Dr. Robert Haslam, the first pediatric neurologist in Calgary and the first chief of pediatrics at Alberta Children’s Hospital.
