An early morning fire has roared through a mill in Maple Ridge, causing significant damage.

The mill is home to Imperial Cedar, which produces roofing and siding materials. They have been on the site since 2006.

The cause of the fire is not known, but when crews arrived on scene on River Road the fire had already erupted through the building.

Firefighters poured huge streams of water on the flames, and thick clouds of white smoke could be seen pouring into the sky.

The Lougheed Highway, between 240 Street and Kanaka Way, was closed for some time.

Crews will be investigating the cause of the fire today.
