SASKATOON – Construction to correct a riverbank slope in Saskatoon is expected to get underway on Monday.

The City of Saskatoon says crews will start work along Saskatchewan Crescent between 15th Street and 16th Street.

This section has been closed since June 2012 when it was discovered that the riverbank had begun sliding towards the South Saskatchewan River.

According to Storm Work Water Utility Manager Andrew Hildebrandt, this work involves deep excavation of the road so a pipe can be installed to reduce groundwater levels.

“Crews will also install light-weight, high-density foam that will support the roadway but lighten the load on the slope,” said Hildebrandt.

Geotechnical testing determined the slope failure was caused by the steep incline, the weight of the soil and groundwater.

This $1.26 million project will be funded by the city’s storm water utility.

Work is expected to be finished by November.
