Saskatoon school gets a boost in nutritional programming

SASKATOON – Students at one local high school are taking a bite out of hunger.

Schools and teachers are well aware of how students underperform on empty stomachs and how much of a difference nutrition makes in the classroom.

“If you have students that are full and are physically active, they’re going to be more attentive in class, they are going to be more open for learning, we’re going to see less discipline problems and more importantly if you know you can come to school for healthy food you have a desire to come to school and we can get them in the door,” said Brandon Stroh, E.D. Feehan Catholic High School Principal.

Students at Feehan have no excuse for hunger after their Breakfast for Learning program was expanded to include lunch, thanks to a Mosaic Extreme School Makeover Challenge.

Seven thousand dollars came with the award.

“Across the country we fund over 2,000 schools and here in Saskatchewan we funded 135 schools last year. E.D. Feehan was one of those schools and we’re most proud of this school for the work they’re doing around creating a healthier learning environment for their students,” said Kelly Berlinic, Breakfast for Learning Community & Organizational Development Director.

Since last fall, students at the school have been planning and preparing the meals for the breakfast program.

The increase in student involvement in the meal program is what made them a winner of the Extreme Makeover Challenge and made the lunch program possible.

In Canada, 31 per cent of elementary and 62 per cent of secondary students do not eat a daily healthy breakfast.
