RECALL: Labelling error prompts over-the-counter drug recall

Personnelle Cold and Flu-in-One Extra Strength Convenience Pack was added to an ongoing Health Canada recall because of a labelling error. Handout/Health Canada

VANCOUVER – Health Canada has expanded a recall for several brands of over-the counter medications due to labelling errors.

The latest item added to the recall is Personnelle Cold and Flu-in-One Convenience Pack, manufactured by Vita Health Products Inc., because it is “missing reference to important information” contained on the inside of the package.

The federal government agency said this is part of an ongoing recall, with some cases dating back as far as 2011

The recall of Vita Health products includes cold and flu medications and pain relief medications sold under brands such as Life, Rexall, Exact and Compliments.

Health Canada said Friday there were no concerns about the quality or effectiveness of the medication, but various warning statements and alerts may be missing on the packaging of the products.

Some of the labelling errors omit direction to refer to the inside of the box for further instruction. In other instances, French instruction on the packaging had “a significant labelling error… that may pose serious risk to children (less than 12 years of age) if taken by them.”

A Vita Health-produced extra strength allergy sinus medication, sold under four different labels, lacked a warning that people with chronic lung disease should not take the product because it contains the antihistamine clorpherinamine maleate that may cause breathing problems.

In three cases, the packaging suggests the product’s container is child resistant, but the bottles did not have child-resistant caps.

According to Health Canada, Toronto-based Vita Health Inc. is reviewing its product labels and is “putting actions in place to address the labelling issues.”

People who have purchased one of the affected products are encouraged to return the medication to the store where they bought it or contact Vita Health directly at 1-800-665-8820.
