A Yukon hotel, famous for their drink the Sourtoe Cocktail, has placed an ad on their website looking for some new toes to add to their collection.

The ad reads: “Wanted – Toes for Sourtoe Cocktail. Got frostbite? The Downtown Hotel in Dawson City Yukon is currently seeking toes for its world famous Sourtoe Cocktail.”

This comes after an incident last month, when a man walked into the Downtown Hotel, and asked for a Sourtoe Cocktail. He then downed the whole drink, toe and all, paid the $500 fine and then left.

The hotel now only has one toe left and is trying to recruit others.

In 2005, Global BC reporter Ted Chernecki went to Dawson City to try the famous cocktail, but he didn’t drink the toe:

The Sourtoe Cocktail is a shot of whisky with a human toe in the glass, and the drinker has to let the toe touch their lips. The fine for swallowing the toe has now increased to $2,500 as the hotel only has one left.

The tradition dates back to 1973 and the creation of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club. The original toe was thought to belong to a prohibition-era rum runner and was found in a cabin.

We have reached out to the Downtown Hotel to see if they have had any takers and will update this post when we hear back.
