Saskatoon drivers dealing with gas leak, water main break

Gas line puncture during construction closes 11th Street West by Circle Drive West. File / Global News

SASKATOON – Saskatoon motorists have a lot to deal with on Tuesday after a gas line puncture and water main break in separate areas.

Drivers looking to use 11th Street West by Circle Drive West will have to look for another route for the next several hours.

A gas line was punctured during construction in the area on Tuesday.

Police have closed both the eastbound and westbound lanes on 11th Street while the line is being repaired.

Then on Circle Drive westbound, a primary water main break between Alberta Avenue and the Idylwyld Drive overpass has closed the two centre lanes and curb lane.

Westbound traffic is merging into the median lane west of Alberta Avenue up to the Idylwyld Drive overpass with no access to Idylwyld northbound.

Drivers are being advised to use 51st Street or Circle Drive South.

The roadway is expected to reopen on Friday.

Here are some additional traffic restrictions currently in place around Saskatoon.

11th Street West

Motorists heading back to work on Monday morning might want to rethink their route due to a portion of 11th Street West being restricted.

Starting around 9 a.m., the eastbound lanes of 11th Street West between Avenue W and the new Circle Drive northbound exit ramp will be closed.

Two-way traffic will be accommodated in the westbound lanes while crews complete some patch work on 11th.

Work is expected to take one day to finish.

However, the eastbound curb lane will remain closed for three to four weeks while 11th Street West is widened.

A suggested alternative route for motorists is 22nd Street West.

22nd Street West

The westbound lanes of 22nd Street West are closed between Betts Avenue and Highway 7 as crews work of the roadway.

Westbound traffic is being detoured southbound on Betts to Hart Road and then to Highway 7 back to 22nd Street West.

The restriction is expected to be lifted by Thursday, Sept. 19.

Further down the road, 22nd Street will be restricted at Avenue S while the concrete median is reconstructed.

The median lanes in both directions will be closed while the curb lanes will remain open to traffic.

Travel times for buses will be slower than normal and the city is advising drivers to find alternative routes in order to avoid congestion.

Circle Drive South Project

Crews continue to put the finishing touches on the Circle Drive South Project, resulting in a lane closure.

The right lane of Idylwyld Drive is closed to facilitate an upgrade to the Clarence Avenue to the northbound Idylwyld Drive ramp entrance.

There are also restrictions in place at Preston Avenue South as construction continues on the overpass at Circle Drive which is expected to open in October.

The southbound centre lane near the Clarence Avenue overpass is also restricted until Wednesday while crews mark the roadway.

Idylwyld Drive

The southbound lanes on Idylwyld Drive between 24th and 27th Streets remain closed as crews continue work on the 25th Street extension.

That restriction is expected to remain in place until the end of October.

Warman Road/Primrose Drive

Restrictions are in place at Warman Road and Primrose Drive as crews work on the water main distribution system.

At different times during the project, the northbound curb lane on Warman Road will be closed.

As well, the westbound centre turning lane from Primrose Drive to Warman Road will also be closed at various times.

The restrictions are expected to be lifted by Friday, Sept. 20.

1st Avenue North

The northbound lane of 1st Avenue North between Circle Drive and 42nd “A” Street remains closed as crews work on the water main distribution system.

Drivers are asked to use Faithfull Avenue to access the local area.

The roadway is expected to open by Friday, Sept. 20.

33rd Street West

33rd Street West remains closed between Steeves Avenue and Dalmeny Road while crews install the water and sewer infrastructure for the new Kensington neighbourhood.

Traffic will be detoured to 22nd Street. The restriction is expected to be lifted by Tuesday, Sept. 24.

20th Street West

The westbound lanes of 20th Street West are closed between Avenues F and E for the second phase of streetscaping.

Two-way traffic will be accommodated in the eastbound lanes.

Avenue F will also be closed south of the intersection for one block.

These restrictions are expected to be in place for three more weeks.

The City of Saskatoon is reminding drivers to allow extra time when travelling through the orange zone, watch for pedestrians and work crews and obey all detours, signs and barriers.
