A mystery tunnel is creating quite a buzz in a Lubbock, Texas neighborhood.
Lee Smithwick discovered it on his property this week after a part of his backyard collapsed.
Smithwick says he thought at first that it was a sinkhole.
That’s when he saw the railroad ties and wooden planks.
He alerted the fire and police departments. And after a closer look, they discovered it was a hidden tunnel, braced with those railroad ties.
The sinkhole in Smithwick’s yard was caused when one of the bracing railroad ties collapsed.
Plenty of questions have arisen since the discovery of the tunnel: who built it? How long ago was it built? And why?
Smithwick says local historians have come out to see the mysterious tunnel, kicking off a case historical detectives could be mulling over for some time.
