Watch: Black bear steals picnic lunch on beach, everything except pickled beans

Bears apparently don’t like pickled foods, or at least one bear doesn’t, who ate his way through a family’s picnic lunch this past weekend.

Heidi Myhill-Jones, her husband and two boys Ben and Charles, were having a picnic lunch on Botanical Beach on Vancouver Island.

“We like to get the boys out as much as possible,” said Myhill-Jones.

Suddenly they heard someone say ‘hey excuse me’ and when they looked, about 10 feet away from them was a black bear.

“He was walking towards us, slowly, but just kind of lumbering towards us,” said Myhill-Jones.

She and the boys went further down the beach, while her husband stayed behind and picked up a log and shouted at the bear. But he was not interested in moving away, he wanted to eat their picnic lunch.

“He knew we had food,” said Myhill-Jones. “He got through the butter and the chocolate chip cookies, which he liked,” she laughed. “Everything except the pickled beans. Bears don’t like pickled food apparently.”

She said she has not seen a bear around her Victoria home before but they wanted to get some footage of this one to show wildlife officers.

“He wasn’t interested in us in any way, he just wanted our food,” said Myhill-Jones.

She is not taking the bear’s snub of her homemade pickled beans too personally.

“I like to make my own stuff, I thought they were delicious, but apparently he didn’t,” she laughed.
