West Vancouver MP spends night outside to check out train noise

For years residents in the District of North Vancouver have complained about the noise trains make while passing through the area overnight.

On Saturday night, local MP John Weston who represents West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country, camped out to get a better idea of the problem.

Residents say the real issue is with the train whistles, which sound off inconsistently throughout the night. They say the seemingly random bursts are disrupting their lives, and they want something done.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

There is even a website, ‘RANT: Residents Against Noisy Trains‘ that has been started so residents can stay up to date with what is going on.

“On a normal night we’d get blasted out of bed about four or five times,” said one resident.

Weston wanted to see and hear for himself what was going on.

“Constituents here are saying ‘well there’s got to be a way we can settle this so that the blowing of whistles can happen at a time when there really is a safety concern at a time that doesn’t necessarily disturb their sleep’, so I just suggested why don’t I come here as my kids would say ‘have a sleep over’ and understand what the people here have to endure in terms of the noise.”
