Harvesters break world record for the hungry

LANGENBURG, Sask. – A new record has been set for the number of vintage threshers running at once.

Forty-one old threshing machines were hauled to Langenburg, Sask., by hobbyists from across Western Canada and the U.S. on the weekend.

Organizers said they beat the previous record of 29 threshers set by a group in Wisconsin.

The Olde Tyme Harvest For Hunger collected cash grain from participant farmers for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, which donates food to 30 countries around the world. Recently they donated more than $1 million in food donations to refugees in Syria.

“We wanted it to be a very special family event to celebrate family and coming together for our agricultural heritage and working together for a greater cause,” said Terry Aberhart, one of the organizers.

Ken Mack, a thresher enthusiast, has 11 working threshers. The idea for the fundraiser spun from his own passion for hosting thresher exhibits. He wanted a show this size to have more meaning.

“We’ve got such an abundance of food and other people are starving,” Mack said.

The event raised $40,000 cash and another $25,000 worth of crops.
