Coyote snatches beloved Chihuahua from yard in Maple Ridge

A family is devastated after a coyote snatched their beloved five-pound Chihuahua from the yard of their home in Maple Ridge Friday night.

Clara Fawcett said her daughter walked with their 18-month-old dog Meanna about 150 feet away from the house to feed their horses at around 6:30 p.m.

“My daughter had gone up to give the horse hay and the little dog went up with her. When my daughter came down she heard a yelp and then a screech and saw the coyote taking off with her,” Fawcett said.

Fawcett’s daughter started screaming and they chased after the coyote for 45 minutes, but they weren’t able to catch up to the wild dog.

“We chased the coyote with our pit bull, who was best friends with Meanna, but had no luck,” she said.

Fawcett said Mena was killed right away by the coyote.

“Within the first or second grab… my daughter heard two yelps and then nothing,” she said.

Coyotes haven’t been a problem in the area, Fawcett said, and she has never lost an animal, let alone a pet, to one, despite living on a farm her whole life.

Conservation officers said there was nothing they could do to help.

Officials suggested they call coyote trappers, but trapping season doesn’t begin until September.

“We’re totally devastated,” Fawcett said.
