Reviving an old tradition in Africville

HALIFAX – There’s a eight-bout card of professional boxing scheduled for Saturday evening in Halifax — but it won’t be in a typical setting like the Halifax Forum or Metro Centre. Instead, the card will be held outside — something that hasn’t been done in several generations.

Haligonian Tyson Cave, 31 years old and ranked 10th in the Super Bantamweight Division by the World Boxing Association, will face Gabor Molnar of Hungary Saturday night under a giant tent in Africville.

On the line is the Canadian Professional Boxing Council Featherweight title belt.

“I have family members from there. Some of my roots come from there,” said Cave. “It’s just a way for me to give back to the land and what better way than to box? That’s what I know.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Tyson’s last fight was in Montreal, where he also fought under a tent — that’s where the idea of the upcoming boxing match first came about. The event, which starts at 5 p.m., will open its gates at noon to host a barbecue, a motorcycle display and events for children.

Tyson’s father, Robert Cave, is the promoter. He says this outdoor event is likely to continue.

Holding a boxing card in Africville was fully endorsed by the Africville Geneology Society.

“What really got my attention is the fact that Robert [Cave] said he wanted to honour all the former boxers that came out of Africville,” says Irvine Carvery, the President of the Society.

“We’re going to have saturday night boxing in Africville every year. So that’s really exciting.”

Cave, whose boxing record is 21 wins and two losses, just made the 126-pound limit.

His opponent, Molnar, who weighed in at only 117 lbs., also has an impressive record according to Cave.

“He’s a good fighter and that’s why he’s here. Twelve wins, nine knockouts, two losses. He’s a credible opponent and I’m just here to dismantle him,” he said.

Tickets are still available at the door.
