VERNON — Fire crews dealt with a raging blaze at the Vernon landfill Monday evening.
A massive pile of old wood and branches fueled the fire, which was ignited by a grinding machine at around 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Within minutes it rapidly spread. As of late Monday the fire had stretched to 10 hectares in size.
There are no structures in the immediate area but Department of National Defence communication towers are within 400-feet.
On the other side of the hill is Clerke Road which is home to residents of a mobile home park and town houses where residents were told by RCMP to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
Fifty personnel from Vernon Fire Rescue, BX, Swan Lake and Coldstream fire departments attacked the blaze.
