Canada loses 39,000 jobs in July; employment declines in BC

A total of 39,000 jobs were lost in Canada in the month of July, and B.C. was part of the employment decline trend.

The unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 7.2 per cent.

In B.C., 12,000 fewer people were employed in July. The unemployment rate rose 0.4 percentage points to 6.7 per cent.

Other provinces including Quebec, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador also saw declines in employment. While Alberta, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan saw employment gains.

Stats Canada says employment was down in health care and social assistance, public administration and information, culture and recreation. These declines were partly offset by gains in business, building and other support services.

Employment declines were concentrated among youths aged 15 to 24 and women aged 55 and over.
