Consumer FYI: Cellphone charges confuse Calgary widow

CALGARY – A Calgary woman is expressing frustration with her late husband’s wireless provider, saying they are continuing to send him cellphone bills even after his death.

Diana Bliss lost her husband Doug to cancer in January, and says although she cancelled his cellphone contract and turned the phone in for recycling, the message somehow fell through the cracks.

Diana paid the final bill, but says Rogers has continued to send her new charges.

Bliss says she has called the company and spoken to customer service agents to explain the situation, but it didn’t resolve anything.

The widow even sent the phone bills back with notes explaining her husband’s passing, but later received a notice from a collection company for $647.

Rogers says it is now looking into how this error could have occurred, and will take all necessary steps to make this right and fully resolve the issue.

They have clarified their policy is to waive all fees in cases like this, and to make the process as simple as possible.

Experts in estate planning advise people in these situations to get a name, title and phone number every time they speak with anyone.

They also advise that it’s best to put requests in writing whenever possible, and to keep confirmation that they have been received.
