Satellite phones can be multipurpose
Morning folks, today we are giving away a Globalstar Spot Global Phone with a three month talk plan. In last week’s show I showed how Satellite phones work and how Globalstar’s technology with a recently launched constellation of low orbit satellites provides larger bandwidth for impressive sound quality.
But there is more. With the optional Spot Global Phone Data Kit, you can connect your laptop to the Internet for basic browsing and email. The Spot Global Phone acts as a modem but with noticeably slower connection speed, not recommended for watching YouTube.
The charges for voice and data is the same, based on the minutes the Spot Global Phone is communicating with satellites. One average email would take about one minute to send out or receive. An MP3 music file would take about 40 minutes to download, obviously too long.
The cheapest plan is 10 minutes for $25 monthly with an overage higher rate. The best monthly plan costs $99.99 monthly for 400 minutes of talk or data time. This works out to 25 cents a minute. If you don’t need so many minutes you might look at an annual plan that allows the allowed minutes to be used for a whole year, like the Galaxy 480 which offers 960 minutes anytime in a one year period for $480.
Consumers and likely our Global TV winner, should consider sharing the cost and usage of the Spot Global Phone with friends or co-workers and take turns taking it on trips. That would make the annual $480 plan attractive.
