Longueuil police spokesperson Patrick Barriere said that the SUV was not speeding, the driver had not been drinking and she was not using a cellphone at the time of the accident.

“Speed wouldn’t be a cause at this point, but we don’t know the exact cause. It may be only that a really sad accident has occurred. The driver is not a suspect in any criminal acts at this point.”

He confirmed that no charges have been laid.

Police suggested that the driver may not have been able to see the little girl because of the height and positioning of the SUV.

In April 2011, a five-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a city bus as it turned a corner outside the Honoré-Beaugrand metro station in Montreal.
