Watch: Young girl killed in Brossard parking lot
Montreal – A six-year-old girl died on Thursday after she was run over by an SUV in a Walmart parking lot in Brossard, Que.
It happened at around 5:15 p.m. at the Quartier DIX30 shopping centre on Montreal’s South Shore.
She was with her mother and three siblings when the driver hit the young girl, trapping her under the SUV.
Emergency crews tried several times to revive the girl. She was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The 43-year-old driver of the SUV, who was with her two children, was taken to hospital where she was treated for nervous shock.
Another adult was also transported to hospital to be treated for shock.
Longueuil police spokesperson Patrick Barriere said that the SUV was not speeding, the driver had not been drinking and she was not using a cellphone at the time of the accident.
“Speed wouldn’t be a cause at this point, but we don’t know the exact cause. It may be only that a really sad accident has occurred. The driver is not a suspect in any criminal acts at this point.”
He confirmed that no charges have been laid.
Police suggested that the driver may not have been able to see the little girl because of the height and positioning of the SUV.
In April 2011, a five-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a city bus as it turned a corner outside the Honoré-Beaugrand metro station in Montreal.
