WINNIPEG – The chief medical examiner is investigating the deaths of Lisa Gibson, 32, and her children Anna, 2, and Nicholas, three months.

“In accordance with the Fatality Inquiries Act, a thorough investigation is being conducted regarding the circumstances under which the deaths occurred,” the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said in a news release Wednesday morning.

Investigators will gather and assess the relevant information and make a decision about the course of action that needs to be taken to prevent similar future deaths, the news release says.

“As this process will take a few months, it is expected this decision will be made in late fall.”

The Gibson children were found unresponsive in a bathtub in their home on July 24, and their mother’s body was found in the Red River on July 27.

Lisa Gibson had sought treatment for postpartum depression, family members have said. Questions have been raised about whether the health-care system’s response to her needs was adequate.

The chief medical examiner can call an inquest into deaths if such an inquiry is deemed necessary.
