Gamers raise over $60,000 in memory of a five-year-old cancer victim

Sarah Parries was a five-year-old girl who loved video games.

So when she got cancer, she would often play her favourite game, Mech Warrior Online, to take her mind off her illness.

Her father Jon says Sarah loved to draw and paint, and play any game that let her express herself with boundless energy.

“She’d always sit on my lap and watch me and steal the headphones off my head, so she could hear it.”

But in May, Sarah fell ill with an inoperable brain tumour, and Jon asked a favor from the makers of Mech Warrior.

Jon had asked for a shout out for Sarah on the Mech Warrior Online forum. But she died before Piranha Games could respond.

So the company decided to do something in her memory.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

They designed a brand new robot called Sarah’s Mech.

“I think it’s amazing. It is going to help a lot of people. It is definitely helping me get through this – it is really hard,” says Jon.

Gamers can purchase Sarah’s Mech to play with online for a $10 donation to the cancer society.

In just a few days, players have contributed over $60,000.

“The response from our community, which is over a million people, was unbelievable,” says Bryan Ekman with Piranha Games. “They reached out to this family they don’t know in Vancouver and there were tones of loving support.”

The fundraiser will continue until August 20.
